Urban Design & Planning

Urban Design and Planning impacts almost all projects. Butterworth Associates prides itself on its keen urban design sense and the sound planning principles surrounding the projects they produce. The firm has had extensive experience in master planning studies, urban design guideline development and project planning and development.

Urban redevelopment and development potential advice is a speciality of the firm. Butterworth Associates is often called upon to provide assistance to a client looking for design solutions that address particular needs.

One such problem frequently addressed is to identify the maximum development potential in a piece of property and then suggest ways and means to achieve the potential.

Such projects often involve considerable alterations to existing structures and frequently require careful programming to avoid or minimise disruptions of business and lifestyle. Our space planning and organisational skills are utilised to plan and schedule such processes.

Project economics and funding is an issue that is now more than ever pivotal to the success of any project. Butterworth Associates has embraced this aspect and in doing so has a commendable history in development strategy. Asset enhancement, project feasibility, funding scenarios, lease strategies, project financing assistance and joint venturing are but a few of the areas which the firm offers.

Many of the projects illustrated in this section are projects that have been conceptualised for developer clients of Butterworth Associates. Some are still awaiting financing and others are now abandoned projects.

Their inclusion here is to illustrate the considerable breadth of knowledge and skill that the organisation can call upon when a new project is conceived. They are reproduced here with the permission of the original developers if these organisations still exist.

The Bermuda Financial Centre was planned to sit on a large five acre urban site adjacent to the west boundary of the City of Hamilton. Butterworth Associates & Design Limited were selected as master planners and lead architects for Bermuda’s largest urban development project. The site, previously occupied by the Bermudiana Hotel, was designated for mixed development use by the Government’s own planners. Much detailed negotiation and discussion with them evolved a project that occupied less than 50% of the site, yet housed a 170 room, five star hotel, 45 luxury condominium apartments, 250,000 sq. ft. of prestigious office buildings and an underground parking facility for 300 cars.

  • Full planning approval for this project was obtained before it was abandoned.
  • Formal planning requirements for the site were subsequently altered to allow a sub-division and development as single use office buildings.
