Urban Design & Planning Projects
Urban Design and Planning impacts almost all projects. Butterworth Associates prides itself on its keen urban design sense and the sound planning principles surrounding the projects they produce. The firm has had extensive experience in master planning studies, urban design guideline development and project planning and development.
Urban redevelopment and development potential advice is a speciality of the firm. Butterworth Associates is often called upon to provide assistance to a client looking for design solutions that address particular needs.
The projects illustrated in this section are projects that have been conceptualised for developer clients of Butterworth Associates. Some are still awaiting financing and others are now abandoned projects.
Their inclusion here is to illustrate the considerable breadth of knowledge and skill that the organisation can call upon when a new project is conceived. They are reproduced here with the permission of the original developers if these organisations still exist.

The Bermuda Financial Centre was planned to sit on a large five acre urban site adjacent to the west boundary of the City of Hamilton. Butterworth Associates were selected as master planners and lead architects for Bermuda’s largest urban development project. The site, previously occupied by the Bermudiana Hotel, was designated for mixed development use by the Government’s own planners.
History
The existing Hotel could not sustain itself and was put on the open market by its then owners (Trust House Forte). The Planning constraints which called for either a new Hotel (Hospitality) or a mixed use (Commercial and Hospitality) had caused the property to be difficult to sell.
