Hospitality
Hotels, Resorts, Residential Clubs
The hospitality industry generally has been and still remains a mainstay of Bermuda's economic life. Butterworth Associates and Design Limited has had considerable experience in resort and hotel development, from cottage colonies to complex multi-use facilities.
Almost invariably, the work has been confined to improvements to existing facilities. New starts in the Hospitality sector are rare as the commercial viability of the industry has declined, not just in Bermuda but throughout the world. There are signs that this drought may end and new starts will feature again.
It is important that architectural organisations such as our own can demonstrate skills in the design of new hospitality ventures by showing some projects that were never built. These were exciting ventures and are shown in this web site in the Past Pleasures section.
New work was still being done at the few remaining successful hotels. A new 18-guest unit and main kitchen facility at Cambridge Beaches required only a three month shutdown to complete. The same facility features a heavily revised spa facility, many upgrade amendments to existing guest villas and a new beach bar / restaurant.
The new guest villas are the most luxurious in this world class resort, which has managed to flourish in the negative economy. More recently the firm completed some outline plans for a further group of larger villas on an adjacent beach property but these have not yet started.
The firm also has great experience in modifications and extensions to existing smaller properties. The Royal Palms Hotel in Pembroke has flourished by offering the (mostly) business traveller comfortable modern accommodations in a garden suburb setting close to Hamilton. A large restaurant is offered here and supplements the guest house image very well. Well kept gardens and a small pool complete a very popular offering.
