Government Commissions
Private practice work opportunities for Government are infrequent in Bermuda. Recent urgencies in education caused a rare chance to work on a school project. Butterworth Associates and Design Limited were selected to design and oversee the conversion of a tired looking cluster of structures that had served the community for many years as the Sandys Secondary School into a multi-million dollar Middle School. Working closely with the Ministry of Works and Engineering, the Department of Education and the School Principal, the project was finished before schedule and entirely within budget. The Project even managed to squeeze the available construction budget to include an open-air amphitheater. This can house the entire school or be used to provide a venue for the local community for concerts and public meetings. This valuable extra to the school the provided the Board of Trustees to use land at the school that was within their stewardship to eventually invest in a privately sponsored sports complex. This was designed by the practice to be built with a reduced budget.

The Board of Trustees was sufficiently impressed with the work, performance and style of this practice that they commissioned the design of a new sports complex on land adjacent to the school. It is unique to Bermuda and has provided a much needed community resource for the entire West end of the Island. This project comprises of a gymnasium, 25-metre indoor swimming pool (air conditioned) and fitness centre complete with changing facilities and spectator areas.
